Erythritol's dangers to cerebral vessels have been identified - new study
A recent study by scientists from the University of Colorado has sparked a serious public debate about erythritol, which has become widely popular among health advocates. This substance is found in products labeled “sugar-free” and “keto” and is actively used in the food industry as an alternative to sugar. However, new scientific data have given rise to a reconsideration of previous views on the effects of erythritol on human health.

Erythritol: “safe” sweetener or hidden danger?

For many years, erythritol was recommended for people with diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome as a low-calorie substance that does not raise glucose and insulin levels. Its natural sweet taste and only 24 kcal of energy per 100 grams made it an ideal solution for those who limit their sugar intake.

However, as a result of laboratory experiments, scientists found that erythritol has a negative effect on blood vessels, especially on the endothelial cells of the blood vessels of the brain. In a short period of time, just three hours, a 75% increase in oxidative stress markers was noted. This was despite the fact that the cells' natural defense mechanisms against harmful effects were strengthened, but it was not enough.

Negative changes in blood vessels

Several other serious changes were identified during the study:
— The production of nitric oxide decreased by 20%, which affects the narrowing and expansion of blood vessels, making circulation difficult.
— The production of the substance endothelin-1 increased by 30%, which increases the risk of spasm and constriction in blood vessels.
— The release of the thrombus-dissolving protein t-PA decreased, as a result, the risk of blood clots increases.

These changes create favorable conditions for the development of stroke and cardiovascular diseases. Scientific experiments have shown that after consuming erythritol, the tendency to form blood clots increases, and in some cases, serious circulatory disorders occur.

Scientific considerations and the need for caution

Although these results have so far been obtained mainly in laboratory conditions, many scientific studies have noted a connection between erythritol and the circulatory system. In 2023, a study led by Witkowski found that people with elevated levels of erythritol in the blood have a significantly increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

Scientists emphasize that it is not necessary to rush to consider erythritol “completely safe”, and especially its regular and excessive use should be limited. The long-term effects of this substance on blood vessels may be reflected, especially in the case of vital cells in the brain.

Scientific research on erythritol and other sweeteners that replace it is ongoing. Healthy lifestyle advocates and diabetics are advised to keep its amount in moderation and follow the rules of proper nutrition. New studies, however, raise more questions about the effects of this sweetener on the body.
