The direction of US policy towards Ukraine has once again caused heated debate at the Munich Security Conference. Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton harshly criticized US President Donald Trump's policy on Ukraine at this forum.
Clinton stressed that the Trump administration's position on Ukraine is "shameful" and that trying to force Kiev to make a "surrender agreement" with Putin is a grave mistake, both historically and morally. She also sharply criticized Putin and Trump for seeking benefits against the backdrop of the suffering of the Ukrainian people.
The former Secretary of State said that Ukraine is now fighting on the "front line" not only for its lands, but also for the values of democracy, freedom and civilization. In her opinion, not understanding this pain or turning a blind eye to it when thousands of people are being lost is a very dangerous signal.
Clinton intensified her criticism and spoke of Trump's betrayal of "Western values": referring to the NATO system, the Atlantic Charter, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, she warned that the world order would weaken as a result of disregard for these principles. She also said that Trump was relying on the Putin regime for his power model, and stressed that no one in the audience would want to live in a regime where he could act with impunity.
The main "nerve" of this speech was this: if decisions on Ukraine are made not at the expense of justice and security, but at the expense of convenience and a quick "deal", then both European security and transatlantic trust could be seriously shaken in the coming years. That is, the scenario of "letting go a little now" on this issue is likely to turn into a bigger problem later - the spirit of the conference also reflects this concern.
