Getting used to salty food increases cancer risk: serious warning from experts
Healthy eating plays an important role in everyone's life. However, unfortunately, due to modern lifestyles and daily habits, many people treat their health carelessly and unknowingly lay the foundation for various illnesses. In particular, a tendency toward overly salty foods may increase the risk of stomach cancer.
This was highlighted by gastroenterologist and Candidate of Medical Sciences Andrey Kharitonov.
According to him, regular consumption of very salty foods sharply increases the rate of cell division in the stomach lining. This can lead to cellular imbalance, “irregular” divisions, and consequently a higher risk of cancer.
How much salt is considered safe?
According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), a person should not consume more than five grams of salt and 25 grams of sugar per day. These quantities are approximately equal to one teaspoon of salt and six teaspoons of sugar.
However, in our daily lives, products with high amounts of salt and sugar such as chips, ready-made foods, ketchup, mayonnaise, sausages, canned food, and various fast foods are very common. These greatly exceed the recommended limits.
The harm of excess salt and sugar is not limited to the stomach
According to Andrey Kharitonov, consuming salt and sugar beyond the recommended amount can negatively affect not only the gastrointestinal tract, but also the cardiovascular system, kidneys, endocrine glands, and overall immunity.
What should be done?
- Limit consumption of salty and sweet foods;
- Prefer natural, home-cooked meals;
- Use more herbs, vegetables, and natural ingredients when cooking;
- Pay attention to numbers — monitor salt and sugar content on food labels.
