Long-term exposure to the screen can increase the risk of developing depression - this conclusion was reached by researchers of an international group that analyzed data from more than 65,000 adult participants. The research was published in the journal European Psychastry - that is, scientific research on the topic was recognized in the official publication.
What did the results say? Studies have shown that in middle-aged people, replacing part of the time spent in front of the television with physical activity or sleep reduces the likelihood of developing depression. In elderly people, such a protective effect is associated only with sports, while in younger participants no negative effects were found - hence, the effect manifests itself differently by age category.
According to the authors, the obtained results indicate that the habit of spending a lot of time in front of the television can be a risk factor for mental illness. Replacing time with more active and beneficial activities can serve as a measure to prevent depression - which finds practical expression in simple steps such as introducing short walks, light exercises, or additional sleep into the daily routine.
In short: regulating screen time, increasing physical activity, and paying attention to sleep hygiene are important for mental health. This way, the risk of depression can be reduced, especially for middle-aged and elderly people.
