Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan rise

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has leveled serious accusations against Pakistan, claiming that overnight air strikes targeted civilian homes in Kabul and the Kandahar province. According to government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, these attacks also hit fuel depots near the Kandahar airport. The Taliban reports that women and children are among the deceased, marking a grim escalation in the ongoing border hostilities that have persisted for three weeks. Reports Aljazeera.com.
The conflict, which intensified on February 26, has resulted in significant displacement, with the United Nations estimating that approximately 115,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. While the UN mission in Afghanistan documented 56 civilian deaths between February 26 and March 5, the Taliban claims the toll is rising following the latest Friday strikes. Pakistan has consistently denied targeting civilians, maintaining that its military operations are aimed at militants, though these claims remain difficult to verify independently.
Islamabad continues to allege that Kabul provides sanctuary to fighters from the Pakistan Taliban and ISIS-K, accusations that Afghan authorities firmly deny. Despite international calls for restraint, the violence shows no signs of abating. As of March 8, 2026, the situation remains volatile, with both nations reporting casualties among their security forces and civilians alike, further destabilizing a region already reeling from broader geopolitical conflicts.
