About the causes of autumn apathy and ways to overcome it

With the arrival of autumn, the days begin to shorten, the air becomes cooler, and changes in nature are also noticeably reflected in the human psyche. Some people involuntarily become lazy, while others experience fatigue, irritability, and depression for no apparent reason. Experts call this "autumn apathy."

Psychologist Inkar Tulegenova spoke in detail about the causes, symptoms, and ways out of this situation on the Jibek Joly TV channel's "Bugun LIVE" program.

According to him, the word "apathy" comes from the Greek word meaning "indifference" or "indifference." Ancient thinkers interpreted this state as a process of overcoming excessive emotions and achieving inner peace. However, in modern medicine, this term is considered a negative phenomenon.

In the 1980s, American psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal conducted scientific research and introduced the concept of "autumn apathy" when it was discovered that people's interest in life and energy decrease due to seasonal climate change.

The psychologist noted that autumn apathy is often seasonal and usually lasts from one to three weeks. During this period, a person experiences loss of appetite, sleep disorders, and decreased interest in work and studies.

- It's not right to confuse apathy and depression with each other. While apathy is more often caused by seasonal changes, depression is usually associated with internal psychological trauma," says the expert.

According to him, the main cause of autumn apathy is associated with a shortening of the day and an increase in the number of hours at night, that is, a change in biological rhythms. At the same time, the process of adapting to work and studies after summer vacation also has a serious impact on the psyche.

The psychologist gave a number of recommendations for overcoming apathy:

• a person definitely needs to find time for rest;

• it is important to make positive thinking a daily habit;

• it is necessary to exercise and use more sunlight;

• healthy nutrition and the use of vitamins are recommended;

• maintain constant relationships with loved ones and friends.

According to the expert, many people associate autumn with sadness, short days, humid and cold weather, and surrounding mud. However, this period can also be perceived as a time of abundance, achievements, and new opportunities. If a person's attitude towards autumn changes for the better, the impact of indifference and apathy will significantly decrease.

At the same time, if the state of depression persists for more than three weeks, specialists advise seeking psychological help.
