Answers to the most frequently asked questions about fasting
What should a person who overslept during the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan do? Should he break his fast or perform the evening prayer first? Can a fasting person use toothpaste? The Fatwa Department of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan has provided an explanation on these and other questions.

- What should a person who overslept during the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan do?
- If a person who overslept during the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan says that he intends to fast, even if it is a small amount, then his intention and the fast he observes that day will not be valid. During Ramadan, a person who sleeps until the morning prayer should make the intention to fast that day, without doing anything that breaks the fast (e.g. eating, drinking, or having sexual intercourse). This intention can be made until the sun rises.

- Is it permissible for a fasting person to swallow saliva?
- Swallowing saliva does not break the fast. One should avoid swallowing saliva intentionally as much as possible. However, it is not makruh for saliva to enter the stomach in normal circumstances.

- Can a fasting person use toothpaste?
- A fasting person can use toothpaste to brush his teeth. Of course, one should avoid swallowing saliva mixed with toothpaste. Otherwise, the fast may be broken.

- Should one break the fast first or perform the evening prayer?

- If raindrops or snowflakes enter the mouth of a fasting person involuntarily and pass through his throat, his fast is broken and he must make up the missed fast.

- If a person has small pieces of food left between their teeth after sahur, and the taste of the food remains after closing their mouth, is the fasting person’s fast valid?
- If the piece of food left between their teeth after sahur is smaller than the size of a pea and they swallow it, there is no harm in it. However, if it is taken out of their mouth and then put back in their mouth and swallowed, the fast is broken. If it is the size of a pea or larger, the fast is broken.

- Is it permissible to sleep until noon during Ramadan?
