In Samarkand, doctors performed a unique and seemingly impossible surgery — an 80-year-old patient underwent the removal of a large goiter that had been troubling him for 60 years.

According to the available information, the elderly patient had refused surgery for many years due to a fear of the procedure. However, when even drinking water became a painful task, he agreed to follow the doctors’ recommendation.

A rare medical case
During an examination at the Central Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with a “giant nodular nontoxic goiter,” a very rare condition caused by prolonged iodine deficiency. Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Akhmadjon Bobozhonov emphasized that in such cases, recovery is only possible through surgery.

“In this procedure, every millimeter was critical. We not only had to remove the large nodules but also preserve the patient’s vital laryngeal nerves and blood vessels. The surgery was successful, and as a result, the patient’s breathing and swallowing improved,” the professor said.

Fast recovery and optimistic outlook
After the operation, the patient recovered in a short period, and his quality of life significantly improved. He is now undergoing light rehabilitation procedures as recommended by his doctors.

Experts stress that such cases highlight the importance of preventing iodine deficiency and monitoring thyroid health. They call on the public to undergo regular medical check-ups and not ignore the symptoms of illness.
