Uzbek national arrested in Azerbaijan for insulting the president

Omonbek Yusupov, a 43-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan, accused of insulting the honor and dignity of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, was identified and detained in Azerbaijan, and then officially extradited to Uzbekistan. According to the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office, he was arrested in Baku in April this year.

Law enforcement authorities put Yusupov on an international wanted list, initially choosing pre-trial detention as a preventive measure. His actions were reviewed in accordance with legal procedures, and a decision on extradition was made based on the October 7, 2002 Convention “On Legal Assistance in Civil, Family, and Criminal Matters.”

During the extradition, the accused was handed over to Uzbekistan’s authorized bodies under the escort of Azerbaijan’s Penitentiary Service. Prosecutors noted that the return of the accused is an important step in ensuring the rule of law in the country.

Meanwhile, the practice of returning citizens who have committed offenses in other countries continues on a regular basis. This case once again shows that violations committed by Uzbek citizens abroad will not go unnoticed by the authorities.

It should be noted that earlier, a 25-year-old Uzbek citizen was also extradited for criminal prosecution upon request of the Prosecutor General’s Office. The agency emphasized the importance of strengthening international legal cooperation.

Notably, insulting or humiliating the president is a serious offense under Uzbek law. Citizens, especially those acting on the internet, are personally responsible for every action.

International legal standards were fully observed during the extradition process. The accused was provided with all legal guarantees. Such cases encourage citizens to adhere to legal and ethical norms.

Currently, the Prosecutor General’s Office continues to monitor the legal status of Uzbeks abroad. It is once again stressed that any violation will inevitably result in liability.
