Billionaire Elon Musk's startup Neuralink has begun looking for new patients for its next round of operations. Now there are no regional boundaries - an adult from anywhere in the world can become the next participant. Previously, applications were only accepted from residents of the United States, Canada and Great Britain.
Neuralink's first patients were people with paralysis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and now volunteers with a new disease are being sought. The company announced that it is looking for people with tetraplegia (paralysis of most of the body). A mandatory condition: the patient must not be able to use both arms due to a spinal cord injury.
Applications can be submitted through the laboratory's official website starting April 2, 2025.
As part of the experiment, the chip will be placed in the skull. Using a special manipulator robot, 64 thin fibers are inserted, which contain a total of 1024 electrodes. The manipulator robot connects the areas of the brain responsible for movement. The thickness of each fiber does not exceed 4 micrometers, and the length does not exceed 20 millimeters. The chip itself is about the size of a coin.
"The study involves placing a small, externally invisible implant in the part of the brain responsible for movement. This device analyzes a person's neural activity and allows him to control a computer or smartphone just by thinking about movement. This does not require any wires or physical movement," the report says.
Recall that in January 2024, the first person in the world was implanted with a Neuralink brain implant. Noland Arbo, 29, was left completely paralyzed after a spinal cord injury in an accident. Arbo was implanted with a Neuralink chip in his brain, allowing him to control a computer with his mind. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
