The Ukrainian military is preparing a new operation that will allow it to completely destroy the Crimean bridge, Vice Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa, the commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (NAF), said in an interview with The Observer.
Previous attacks and their impact
The Crimean bridge has been attacked twice before by Ukraine. The first attack was carried out on October 8, 2022, the day after Vladimir Putin's 70th birthday. As a result of the attack, a truck was blown up and two automobile tracks collapsed, as well as a fire broke out on the railway section. The Russian side estimated the damage at more than 7 billion rubles, and the repair work lasted 8 months.
The second attack was carried out on July 17, 2023, using unmanned sea boats. This time, the bridge's roadway was again damaged. The head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasily Malyuk, admitted that he personally planned these attacks. According to him, while in the first attack, explosives were specially hidden in a truck, in the second attack Sea Baby kamikaze drones capable of carrying 850 kilograms of explosives were used.
Ukraine is preparing for a new attack
According to Neijpapa, previous attacks caused serious damage to the Crimean bridge, which created logistical problems for the Russian army. Russian military personnel are unable to transport heavy freight cars across the bridge. This time, Ukraine plans to completely destroy the bridge.
The Ukrainian military has not disclosed the exact details of the new attack, but it is understood that the Russian side is aware of the operation. According to Malyuk, the Crimean Bridge is a strategically important facility connecting the southern regions of Ukraine with Russia, and by destroying it, Ukraine will take an important step towards liberating its territories.
Crimean Bridge - an important transport route for Russia
The Crimean Bridge is a strategic facility that began construction after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. This 19-kilometer bridge connects Russia with Crimea and plays an important role in delivering military equipment, troops and food to the peninsula. The bridge began construction in 2016 and was officially put into operation in 2018.
Ukraine aims to deliver a logistical blow to Russia's southern front by destroying this bridge. The Ukrainian leadership, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, has repeatedly emphasized this goal.
How will the new offensive affect Russia?
If Ukraine successfully attacks the Crimean bridgehead, it could seriously damage the Russian army's supply system. In addition, the mobility of Russian troops on the peninsula would be limited. This would allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to effectively conduct operations in the Kherson and Zaporizhia directions.
So far, Russian officials have not made an official statement about the new attack planned by Ukraine, but Moscow is taking the threat to the Crimean bridgehead seriously. This could lead to further intensification of military operations in the region in the future. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
