Meta’s Reality Labs division (Facebook) has unveiled an innovative bracelet that converts muscle movements into computer commands. The device detects electrical signals from the user’s wrist muscles and transmits them directly to a computer.
This high-tech bracelet is the company’s most significant innovation following the failed Metaverse project and is now recognized as a practical real-world technology. It connects via Bluetooth and allows the user to write text or control a computer remotely through hand movements.
The bracelet can convert handwritten movements into text in real time. Experiments showed that it can operate at a speed of 20.9 words per minute. While slower than smartphone typing, the technology’s potential is vast.
A breakthrough for people with disabilities
The technology holds great promise for individuals with mobility or speech limitations, as well as those working with multiple monitors. It could become a new communication tool for people who’ve lost the use of their hands.
