Archaeologists have discovered a significant find at the bottom of the Madura Strait near the Indonesian island of Java. Among them are fragments of the skull of Homo erectus, considered an ancient ancestor of humanity, and the remains of numerous animals. The results of this study were published in the scientific journal Quaternary Environments and Humans.
According to the researchers, these finds provide invaluable information about the natural environment, ecosystem and lifestyle of ancient people in the ancient underwater region of Sundaland, which existed about 140,000 years ago.
Clear evidence of the practice of hunting animals and eating bone marrow has also been obtained. In particular, specially processed turtle bones and bone fragments of many large animals, including cattle, are also among the finds. This is of great importance in studying the hunting skills, lifestyle and food production methods of ancient people.
According to experts, Homo erectus people in Java did not live in isolation from other regions, as previously thought. On the contrary, they moved freely around rivers rich in food and water during periods of low sea levels and spread widely. It is also believed that their hunting skills may have been learned from other human groups. This indicates that there were close contacts or even genetic mixing between ancient human groups.
This news further enriches the imagination of the lifestyle and natural environment of Southeast Asia in prehistoric times, confirming that at that time this region was similar to the African savannah. Hippos, elephants and even large predatory lizards lived in the Sundaland region. This ecosystem may have provided ideal conditions for the development and spread of humanity.
This unique collection of artifacts found by archaeologists is currently scheduled to be exhibited at the Bandung Geological Museum. Also, some of the findings may be shown to viewers around the world in future traveling exhibitions.
