The United Nations (UN) has officially declared the start of famine in Gaza City. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the situation as “a failure of humanity.”
According to the report, more than half a million people are facing hunger and the risk of death. From August to September, the problem may worsen, forcing around 641,000 people to live in harsh conditions.
The UN and other organizations point to Israeli restrictions on aid entry as the cause of the famine. Israel, however, rejects these accusations, saying: “we are pursuing a policy of aid, not a policy of hunger.”
Experts warn that 132,000 children under the age of five could die due to malnutrition. Healthcare, water, and other essential services have collapsed.
UN representatives describe this famine as a preventable tragedy. In their view, broader aid access and an immediate ceasefire are the only solutions.
