In the southern region of India – in the state of Tamil Nadu, a political event turned into a severe tragedy. In the Karur district, as a result of a stampede at the election rally of the famous actor and politician Vijay, at least 39 people lost their lives. According to official data, among the deceased were women, men, and children.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the rally, which took place on Saturday. According to local media reports, the event began several hours later than scheduled, which led to instability in the crowd. Television footage showed people losing consciousness and falling to the ground.
Politician Senthil Balaji, speaking to journalists, confirmed the death toll and reported that more than 50 people were injured. The state’s health minister, Ma Subramanian, told local media that among the victims there were 16 women, 9 men, and 6 children.
According to the head of the Tamil Nadu state government, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, many citizens lost consciousness in the stampede and were taken to hospitals. Doctors from neighboring areas were called in to help the injured. In addition, it was announced that the families of the deceased would be paid compensation in the amount of one million rupees (about 11,300 US dollars).
An investigation into the tragedy has begun. In a statement published online, Vijay said he felt with a “shattered heart” and was experiencing “unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.” He expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those in the hospital.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on the X platform, called the incident a “tragic accident.”
In the country, stampedes in crowds have not been rare in recent years. This year alone, several similar tragedies have occurred, including the stampede at the Kumbh Mela festival and at the entrance to the stadium during the celebration of the victory of the local cricket team “Royal Challengers.”
