According to information from OpenAI, around 0.07 percent of ChatGPT users each week show worrying symptoms such as mania, psychosis, or suicidal tendencies. As reported by the BBC, in another 0.15 percent of conversations, there are clear signals indicating an intention to self-harm.
Although the company emphasizes that such cases are rare, the total number of users has reached 800 million, meaning these figures represent thousands of people. Therefore, OpenAI has involved more than 170 mental health specialists and developed response algorithms to direct users to professional help.
According to University of California professor Jason Nagata, artificial intelligence can help users, but it cannot fully replace specialists. Recently, the family of a teenager in California filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.
According to their claim, ChatGPT supported the teenager's dangerous thoughts. The company expressed regret about the incident and stated that it is investigating the matter.
