Dick Cheney — former Vice President of the United States and a figure who played a significant role in the country's politics at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries — passed away on November 3, 2025, at the age of 84. Cheney is remembered for his complex political career: he was famous as a strategist at the end of the Cold War and as one of the key architects of the fight against terrorism.
Cheney was born in 1941 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was expelled from Yale University several times and worked as a manual laborer, but after receiving a master's degree in political science from the University of Wyoming, his life changed dramatically.
His political career began in Washington, and during Gerald Ford’s presidency, he rose to White House Chief of Staff. In 1978, he was elected to Congress from Wyoming and became one of the main strategists of the Republican Party.
Cheney was known for staying out of the public spotlight but was recognized for his precise planning and excellent organizational skills. In 1989, he was appointed US Secretary of Defense and led swift military interventions in Panama as well as operations to liberate Kuwait.
Cheney’s carefully considered decisions reflected his political philosophy. In 1995, he ran Halliburton, achieving great success in the business sector as well.
However, he was also criticized for the close ties between his political and economic activities. In 2000, he became Vice President and, after the events of September 11, 2001, became a central figure in American politics.
He supported military intervention in Afghanistan and the establishment of the Guantanamo detention center. In 2003, he supported the invasion of Iraq, a war that sparked constant criticism and brought political instability to the country for years.
Cheney remained active until the end of his career, wrote his memoirs, and continued to work as a political advisor. On the occasion of his passing, President Joe Biden referred to him as "a man who changed history," and former President George Bush offered his condolences, calling him "a trusted advisor and friend."
Cheney remained a symbol of complex politics, and his career is still the subject of many debates and controversies. Read “Zamin” on Telegram!
