Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan has created an 18-carat gold toilet that will soon be put up for auction, ABC News reported.
This unusual artwork, titled “America,” is made of 101 kilograms of pure gold and will go under the hammer on November 18 at Sotheby’s in New York with a starting price of 10 million dollars.
According to auction representatives, buyers will be able to monitor the bidding price online. However, expert David Galperin emphasized that people should not “sit” on this piece of art, as its artistic value lies elsewhere.
For reference, the first version of the toilet, named “America,” was installed in a New York museum in 2016. However, in 2019 it was stolen. Later, the artist created an updated version and presented it again to the public.
According to Cattelan, this artwork symbolizes limitless wealth and humanity’s excessive desire for luxury and fame. Auction experts note that its value may increase significantly.
Earlier, it was reported that a U.S. startup called Somatis had developed a robot capable of automatically cleaning public toilets.
