Iraq cancels import of gasoline and diesel: a new stage has begun

The Iraqi government made an important decision in the country's history on November 4 - now the state will not import gasoline, diesel, or kerosene. This was reported by Al Arabiya publication.

According to the document signed by Prime Minister Mohammad Shiya al-Suda, the country can now fully provide fuel through domestic production. This is considered not only an important economic turning point, but also a step towards Iraq's energy independence.

The oil minister's statement emphasized that domestic refineries and processing complexes have dramatically increased production. Now Iraq not only covers its own needs for gasoline and diesel, but also has the opportunity to export excess volumes.

Officials emphasized that this decision indicates the rapid development of Iraq's oil sector. At the same time, the country is strengthening its position in the international energy market.

For information, Iraq is one of the major manufacturing countries that is a member of OPEC. It exports an average of 3.6 million barrels of oil per day.

According to the state oil marketing company SOMO, in the last quarter of 2024, Iraq sold more than 4.4 million tons of petroleum products to foreign markets. Of these, about 4.2 million tons were fuel oil - a significantly higher figure compared to the same period in 2023.

According to experts, the increase in exports in October is explained by a decrease in demand in the domestic market and an increase in production volumes. Among the main buyers, India and Singapore occupied leading positions.
