The US may launch a military operation in Mexico

The administration of former US President Donald Trump has begun planning a mission to combat drug cartels in Mexico. According to US media citing government sources, these plans consider the possibility of using American troops and intelligence structures.

According to reports, various scenarios for the operation are being developed. Among them are plans for ground operations involving special forces units, as well as drone strikes targeting cartel leaders and their infrastructure.

Sources emphasize that initial preparations for the mission have already begun, but a final decision has not yet been made on the scale of the operation and deployment of troops. Such a mission differs significantly from Washington's previous approaches, since previously the US had been limited to assisting Mexican security forces only.

The White House has refrained from making an official comment, but the administration has confirmed its commitment to eliminating threats posed by the cartels. Previously, President Trump had described cartel activities as a "threat to national security."

The legal basis for such actions is provided by a decision of the US State Department in February 2025. That decision declared several Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, thereby expanding the powers of the US military and special services.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, on the other hand, has rejected any intervention, issuing a statement that her country "will cooperate, but will not submit." Nevertheless, US officials do not rule out the possibility of conducting unilateral operations.
