According to the Financial Times, Gopichand Hinduja, head of India's major industrial and financial empire - Hinduja Group conglomerate, has died from a prolonged illness in one of London's hospitals. He was 84 years old.
In May of this year, the descendants of Hinduja once again took first place in The Sunday Times' list of Britain's richest people. According to the publication's estimates, the property of Gopichand Hinduja and his family is estimated at £35.3 billion (approximately $45 billion).
Gopichand Hinduja joined the family business in 1959. A number of strategic decisions he made during his career fundamentally changed the fate of the company. In particular, the 1984 acquisition of Gulf Oil, a major American oil company, and the 1987 acquisition of Ashok Leyland, an Indian manufacturer of commercial vehicles and agricultural machinery, which faced a financial crisis, were decisive steps.
These two agreements laid the foundation for the future growth of the Hinduja Group. The company initially operated as a small trading organization focused on the Indian and Iranian markets, but later evolved into a large international industrial conglomerate encompassing energy, finance, automotive, and information technology.
Gopichand Hinduja was active not only in the business world but also in charitable activities. Even before his death, he invested heavily in education, healthcare, and community projects.
The news of his death was met with deep sorrow not only in India, but also in business circles around the world. Many remember him as the "global face of Indian business."
