
Thailand's navy has launched an operation to expel the Cambodian army from Trat province, which belongs to the kingdom, Reuters reports.
"Thailand is firmly determined to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and military measures must be taken if necessary," said Defense Ministry spokesperson Rear Admiral Surasat Kongsiri.
On December 8, border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia escalated, with Bangkok and Phnom Penh accusing each other of violating the ceasefire. Both sides announced the evacuation of civilians from the border areas.
According to Reuters, Thailand and Cambodia have been disputing parts of their 817-kilometer land border for over a century. Disagreements over ancient temples also fuel national sentiments, leading to occasional armed clashes.
A border conflict in June resulted in more than 40 casualties from both sides, with 300,000 residents displaced as refugees.
