Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, left the country and arrived in Oslo on Thursday. Her escape was facilitated through a covert operation involving U.S. representatives and some members of Nicolas Maduro's regime.
This was reported by Bloomberg, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. According to U.S. officials, the 58-year-old Machado began her journey on Tuesday.
She chose one of the most dangerous routes for undocumented migration. Machado secretly left Caracas disguised with a wig and makeup, traveling for ten hours to reach a small fishing village in the north of the country.
From there, she was taken by sea to the island of Curaçao. From Curaçao, Machado flew on a private jet to Bangor, Maine, in the United States, before heading to Norway.
Machado traveled approximately 8,850 kilometers from Caracas to Oslo, involving both a sea journey and multiple flights. Her escape was made possible through the efforts of dozens of people.
They helped hide her and facilitated her departure from Venezuela. Since 2024, Machado had been active in the underground movement.
Early Thursday morning, Machado appeared on the balcony of the Grand Hotel in central Oslo. She was greeted with applause by her supporters.
In a phone conversation with the chair of the Nobel Committee, Machado expressed gratitude to those who risked their lives to help her escape from Venezuela.
