Japan is set to lose its pandas due to the cold relations with the Chinese government, reports Kyodo News Agency. The last two pandas will return to their homeland early next year.
The panda is considered a symbol of China and a national treasure. These animals are leased by Beijing to zoos around the world.
According to Kyodo, although the pandas being returned were born in Japan, they are still considered the property of the Chinese state. Beijing initially sent pandas to Japan in 1972 as a symbol of the normalization of relations between the two countries.
Kyodo notes that these pandas have won the affection of the Japanese people and have become prominent tourist attractions. It is worth noting that relations between Tokyo and Beijing deteriorated following a statement by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could prompt Japan to engage in the conflict.
The situation was further complicated by a comment from a Chinese consul in Osaka, who referred to Takaichi as "a filthy neck that must be cut."
