The scientific community in the United States has experienced a significant loss. Nuno Loureiro, a prominent nuclear physicist and head of the Plasma Physics and Thermonuclear Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), tragically passed away.
According to U.S. law enforcement agencies, on December 15, the scientist was found at his home in Brooklyn with severe gunshot wounds. Although Loureiro was immediately taken to the hospital, doctors could not save his life. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Police have launched a criminal case regarding the incident and are conducting a search for the suspect. The investigation is underway, and the motive behind the attack has not yet been determined.
Notably, two days prior, a shooting occurred at Brown University, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to nine others of varying severity. However, FBI officials have stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest a connection between the two incidents. Nuno Loureiro's home is approximately 80 kilometers away from Brown University.
As background, Nuno Loureiro was born in Portugal and moved to the United States in 2005. Since 2016, he had been working at MIT, initially serving as the deputy director of the Plasma Physics Center, before being appointed as its head. Loureiro was internationally renowned for his research in plasma and thermonuclear fusion studies.
This tragedy has once again brought the issue of scientists' safety in the United States to the forefront. The scientific community has expressed profound condolences over Loureiro's death.
