The United States government has approved the sale of weapons worth $11.1 billion to Taiwan. This marks the largest military aid package provided to the island nation.
This arms delivery agreement is the second such contract under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision comes at a time when China has been increasing its military and diplomatic pressure on Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan as part of its territory. The aid package includes eight types of weaponry: HIMARS rocket systems, howitzers, Javelin anti-tank systems, Altius kamikaze drones, and spare parts for other equipment.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense stated that the weapons would strengthen the country’s defensive capabilities and help ensure stability in the region. Currently, the agreement is in the stage of being notified to the U.S. Congress.
In theory, lawmakers have the authority to block or modify the deal; however, there is widespread bipartisan support for Taiwan in Congress. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te previously announced an additional $40 billion defense budget for the 2026–2033 period.
He emphasized that there would be no compromise on matters of national security. China has harshly criticized the U.S.'s decision, arguing that such arms deliveries undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and demanded an immediate halt to military cooperation with Taiwan.
