Tensions have once again flared up along the border between Estonia and Russia. On the morning of December 17, three border guards from the Russian Federation illegally crossed into Estonian territory. The incident was officially confirmed by Estonia's Minister of the Interior, Igor Taro.
A 20-minute “visit”: What happened in Vasknarva?
According to ERR news agency, the incident occurred at the Vasknarva port located on the banks of the Narva River in eastern Estonia. The Russian border guards arrived on the Estonian shore by boat, disembarked, and reportedly strolled inside the country for approximately 20 minutes.
The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) reported that the incident was captured on video. The footage shows the Russian military personnel clearly crossing the border and later getting back into the boat to return to their own territory.
Igor Taro stated that the offenders were not apprehended in time. "We do not have the legal authority to pursue them into Russian territory," the minister explained.
Diplomatic tension: Tallinn demands explanation
The purpose behind the Russian military personnel's intrusion into Estonian territory remains unclear. A meeting involving representatives from both nations is scheduled for December 18 to discuss the matter. Estonia expects an official and substantiated explanation from Moscow about the incident.
Furthermore, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to summon the chargé d'affaires of the Russian Embassy to deliver a formal protest note regarding the incident.
The "Baltic defense line" and Putin’s response
This incident occurred at a time when the Baltic states are bolstering their security measures. In mid-December, Estonia began installing the first reinforced concrete bunkers in its southeastern regions bordering Russia. These installations are part of the "Baltic Defense Line" initiative.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Moscow has no intention of waging war with NATO countries, citing no geopolitical or economic interest in such a conflict. However, he also remarked earlier this month that if a confrontation were to occur, Russia is fully prepared.
Whether this border incident was a genuine mistake or a deliberate provocation remains uncertain — upcoming diplomatic negotiations are expected to shed light on the matter.
