Green Card program to be suspended in the US
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced on the X social media platform that she had directed the Citizenship and Immigration Services to suspend the DV1 visa program under the Green Card lottery. This visa is annually granted to individuals who win the lottery to immigrate to the United States.

Through the DV1 program, up to 50,000 foreign nationals enter the U.S. each year. Participation in this program requires a high school education or two years of professional experience.

Kristi Noem noted that Portuguese citizen Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, suspected of murdering two Brown University students, came to the U.S. in 2017 under this visa. During this incident, Uzbek citizen Muhammadaziz Umurzoqov was killed.

The report also mentioned Uzbek national Sayfullo Saipov, who entered the U.S. through this visa in 2017 and deliberately killed eight people in New York by ramming them with his vehicle. CBS News highlighted that former U.S. President Donald Trump had long been critical of the DV1 visa lottery.

According to Trump, such visas pose a threat to national security. However, supporters of the program argue that it benefits the U.S. economy and positively impacts the country's image.
