Japan Confirms Commitment to Nuclear Disarmament

Japan confirms commitment to denuclearization

Japan continues to adhere to its three non-nuclear principles despite remarks from a representative of the Prime Minister’s Office suggesting the country should possess nuclear weapons. This was confirmed by Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara.

Kihara emphasized that Tokyo's stance remains unchanged: Japan firmly adheres to its principles of not producing, not possessing, and not allowing the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory. As the only nation to have experienced atomic bombings, Japan plans to continue promoting practical measures to strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime, he stated.

In response to journalists’ questions regarding potential accountability or personnel decisions related to the official who made the statement about nuclear weapons, Kihara did not provide a direct answer, merely stating that the government does not comment on individual remarks. Earlier, Kyodo News reported that Sane Takaichi, a representative of the Prime Minister's Office, had suggested in an informal conversation that Japan needs to acquire nuclear weapons.
