The prison where Oscar Wilde was held will become a refuge for artists

The former prison in Reading, England, has been purchased by the Ziran Educational Foundation, Weekend reports. Writer Oscar Wilde served his sentence there from 1895 to 1897.

The new project is planned as a safe space for creatives facing persecution and pressure. Foundation representatives want to open an art center and a boutique hotel there.

This summer, the foundation will present its renovation concept: during the rebuild, cells will be turned into exhibition halls and studios. Architects promise to preserve the prison’s Victorian appearance, blending its тяжелая history with contemporary art.

As a reminder, Wilde’s two years in prison inspired his famous work, “The Ballad of Reading Gaol.”
