China’s birth crisis: record low rate recorded

In China, the birth rate fell to a record low in 2025. This year, 5.63 babies were born per 1,000 people. At the same time, the death rate also increased, with 8.04 deaths per 1,000 people recorded. As a result, China’s population decreased by 3.39 million, reaching 1.4 billion people.
The government has been providing various incentives to stop the population decline. In 2016, the “one-child” policy was abolished, and first two, then three children were allowed. In recent years, payments have been introduced for parents for each child under 3 years old, and additional bonuses in some regions.
However, many young families delay having children because the cost of raising a child is high and they want to live without constant worry about their children. Therefore, the birth rate is not increasing. Experts emphasize that decisions about having children in China are more dependent on social and economic conditions.
Population decline may also affect the country’s economy. There is a possibility of a reduced workforce, fewer consumers, and increased pressure on the pension system. Therefore, the government continues to strengthen population policy and encourage young people to start family life.
