Number of Russian soldiers killed in the war in Ukraine revealed

Since the start of the large-scale armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, new shocking figures on Russian army losses have been released. According to an investigation by BBC Russian Service and Mediazona conducted with volunteers, as of January 13, 2026, at least 163,606 Russian servicemen’s deaths have been confirmed through open sources.
Loss breakdown and officers’ fate
According to the verified list, 6,302 of those killed on Russia’s side are high-ranking officers. Notably, since autumn 2024 the group suffering the heaviest losses on the battlefield has again been volunteers (53,976 people).
- Prisoners and mobilized troopsAlthough prison recruitment has declined, the death rate among prisoners and those mobilized remains high.
- Age groupsThe largest losses fall on men aged 36–38 and 33–35. People in these age groups are generally considered to have gone to the front voluntarily.

According to Ukraine’s Armed Forces General Staff, Russia’s total losses (killed and wounded) have exceeded 1.1 million.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) strongly condemned Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, calling them a “crime against humanity.”
