Illegal mining detected on 190,000 hectares of forest land

The Indonesian government has launched large-scale measures against illegal mining activities in forest areas. According to Reuters, unauthorized mining has been detected on nearly 190,000 hectares of forest land. The government plans to return these areas to state control.

Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki told a parliamentary hearing that the mining sites were operating without proper permits. He did not disclose the names of the companies involved. No details were provided on the resources being extracted or on timelines.

A special task force has so far taken back more than 8,000 hectares of land. Nickel, coal and other minerals were found to have been mined in these areas. Illegal palm oil plantations are also being placed under state control.

The Attorney General’s Office said that companies involved in illegal activities could face large fines. The government said it will continue efforts to protect forests and ensure the legal use of natural resources.
