According to the results of scientific research by scientists at the University of California, the reduction of night sleep time to six hours a day sharply increases the probability of a person contracting acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI). More precisely, this risk is 4.2 times higher! These serious conclusions were published in the authoritative journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity (BBI).
Research: What was paid attention to?
164 voluntary participants were involved in the project, and specialists continuously monitored their health for two months. In addition to medical examinations, deep information was gathered about the lifestyle of the participants (stress level, harmful habits, alcohol consumption). However, researchers gave priority attention to sleep indicators — its duration, regularity, and subjective quality were noted.
The main factor of defense
Careful analysis of the collected data showed that specifically the sleep duration index turned out to be the main predictive factor for the risk of contracting cold-related viruses.
In voluntary participants who slept just six hours a day, the chance of falling ill was 4.2 times higher compared to those who rested for at least seven hours.
Furthermore, the reduction of night sleep to five hours increased this risk up to 4.5 times.
A distinguishing feature of the study is that factors such as age, socioeconomic conditions, and various harmful habits had almost no effect on susceptibility to infection. The conclusion is that the strength of the immune system mainly depends on the full rest of the body. To be healthy, every person should guarantee themselves 7 hours of quiet sleep.
