Farmers in Syrdarya complain about land plots being seized

Reports that land plots are being seized in the Khavos district of Syrdarya region have sparked broad discussion on social media. After information circulated in local Telegram channels, Kursiv Uzbekistan spoke with one of the farmers about the situation. This was reported by kursiv.uz reports .
According to the farmer, on December 30 they were told verbally, on behalf of the regional governor, that land belonging to all farming enterprises was planned to be taken back. After that, working groups made up of representatives of various agencies began arriving every day: the regional прокуратура, internal affairs bodies, the Compulsory Enforcement Bureau, the tax service, and other structures.
He says that property is being transferred to the state without enforcement documents, while landowners are being forced to write applications stating a “voluntary relinquishment” of their plots. For those who refuse to sign such papers, inspections have reportedly been launched via the Agroinspection, fines have been issued, and lawsuits are being prepared on the basis of “mandatory conclusions” from the district Farmers’ Council.
Commenting on the situation, economist Yuliy Yusupov noted that this process could intensify public concerns about a “second collectivization” in Uzbekistan. He stressed that 2026 should not go down in the country’s history as the “Year of the Second Collectivization,” raising the question of whether the Stalin-era experience is being repeated.
Kursiv Uzbekistan’s editorial team said it had sent inquiries to the Agroinspection, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Syrdarya regional administration to obtain an official comment on the situation.
