Russian tennis player Kamilla Rahimova has joined the Uzbekistan national tennis team. This was announced by the press service of the Uzbekistan Tennis Federation.
Representatives of the federation noted that Rahimova's addition would further strengthen the women's national team. As of early December, the athlete is ranked 109th in the WTA rankings.
President of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpishchev, stated that Rahimova’s transfer to the Uzbekistan national team should not be considered a betrayal. According to him, Kamilla Rahimova’s decision to change her sporting nationality is simply tied to her desire to continue her playing career.
“She would not have been able to join our national team. However, with Uzbekistan, opportunities exist.
But this does not yet guarantee a spot in the Olympics. To qualify for the Olympics, one must be ranked within at least the top 60–70 in the WTA rankings,” Tarpishchev said in an interview with the TASS news agency.
Kamilla Rahimova was born on August 28, 2001, in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The 24-year-old tennis player has won three WTA doubles titles.
Her best ranking in singles has been 60th. This information was provided by the Uzbekistan Tennis Federation.
According to the Ubitennis portal, Rahimova is currently participating in the WTA 125 tournament held in the French city of Angers. In the tournament's first round, she defeated Russia’s Alina Korneeva with a score of 6:1, 6:1.
Rahimova is one of two Uzbekistani players in the WTA rankings to be included in the top 200.
