AI and Visual Content: Instagram Head’s View

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the rapid development of AI technologies could affect trust in visual content online. According to him, in the near future users may no longer be able to treat photos and videos as definitive proof of reality.

In an interview with The Verge, Mosseri noted that the quality of AI-generated content has improved. In his view, modern algorithms are already capable of creating videos and images that are indistinguishable from real ones.

"We used to trust any photo taken by a camera, but the technological advances behind it may simply not match reality," Mosseri said.

Adam says social media users should pay attention not only to the image itself, but also to the content’s source, context, and the author’s intent.

Instagram is exploring new ways to manage and identify AI-generated content. This includes verifying authenticity, clearly labeling AI-made materials, and using "trust signals" when shaping recommendations.

Mosseri also emphasized that in the era of generative AI, authenticity will become even more important. In his view, working with genuine, non-fake content and human experience is the key advantage of creators who earn user trust.

As a result, social networks and users are facing a new reality: visual content no longer represents an unquestionable truth, making critical evaluation of what we see an essential digital skill.
