The sanitary-epidemiological situation sharply worsened in the Atbasar district of Akmola region, Kazakhstan, reports tengrinews.kz. At the end of June, anthrax was detected in this area, initially four people were found to be infected. They received necessary medical help and their condition was assessed as moderately severe. Although the ministry previously stated that no quarantine would be imposed, on July 8, quarantine measures were officially introduced in Atbasar.
According to Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov, the quarantine was first introduced in the two villages where anthrax was detected. Entry of cattle and people to these areas is strictly prohibited, special barriers have been installed, and an anti-epidemic team has begun disinfection. Initial information noted that infection was found in 19 citizens, with one patient in serious condition. However, later the ministry clarified: samples were taken from 19 people, anthrax was confirmed in seven of them, and the rest had negative results.
According to the ministry, quarantine measures will last for 15 days. During this time, all anti-epidemic actions will be taken in the region, new samples will be collected for analysis. If the spread of infection is not detected, quarantine will be lifted.
Anthrax is a dangerous infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, which mainly lives in the soil and is transmitted to humans through animals. For humans, infection usually occurs through contact with infected animals or their products, or by consuming poorly cooked meat, manifesting as skin, gastrointestinal, or lung forms. Importantly, the disease is not transmitted from person to person.
Officials are urging the public to be careful, to buy meat only in stores and markets under veterinary supervision. In this case, only strict prevention and proper organizational measures can prevent the spread of the disease.
