According to available information, an unidentified individual impersonated US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, contacting American and foreign officials via fake email and the Signal messenger. Official notifications about this incident were sent to State Department employees.
According to WP, the scammer created an account with the address [email protected] in June and sent messages using artificial intelligence to mimic Rubio's voice and writing style. It was discovered that reminders were sent only to three ministers, a state governor, and a member of Congress, but the content of the messages remains confidential. In one case, the scammer invited the recipient to a meeting.
It is still unknown whether any officials responded to these messages, or who was behind the scam. The State Department suspects that this was an attempt to manipulate diplomats into revealing confidential information.
Observers and experts emphasize that it is time for the US state system to pay serious attention to threats related to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The White House has promised to strengthen checks and preventive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. So far, the names of affected officials have not been announced.
