Across the world, the problem of overweight and obesity among children is rapidly intensifying. In a report published on October 16 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the occasion of World Food Day, this alarming trend was once again emphasized.
According to the report, in 2024 about 670 million people worldwide are suffering from hunger, while at the same time 391 million children are overweight. Of these, 188 million suffer from severe obesity. This means that one in five children is overweight, and one in ten is obese.
FAO analysts note that this situation is particularly visible in Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, and North America. For example, in Chile, 58% of children are overweight, while in the islands of the South Pacific, almost half are affected.
Experts believe that poor nutrition, a sedentary lifestyle, and dependence on fast food are the main causes of this issue. This poses a serious threat to children’s health.
FAO and the World Health Organization stress the need for large-scale national programs aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, teaching balanced nutrition, and encouraging children to engage in sports.
Scientists state that obesity affects not only physical but also mental health. Therefore, combating this problem must become a top priority at the global level.
