US Senate Restarts Government Operations

The US Senate approved a bill to restore government operations and end the 40-day shutdown, CNN reports. The agreement required the consent of eight Democratic senators.

They supported provisions guaranteeing federal employees would return to their jobs after being furloughed. This bill allows partial funding of the budget, while the remaining agencies will receive funds until January 30, 2026, Politico reported.

In exchange for their votes, Democrats secured a promise for a Senate vote in December on extending Obamacare tax credits from the Trump administration. “After a long 40-day hiatus, we will have the opportunity to put an end to this shutdown,” said Senate representative John Thune.

CNN noted that despite the successful vote, any senator could delay the bill's adoption for several days.
