Gary Vetter, a farmer from Iowa, has been raising cattle since he was 10. He overcame many difficulties over 55 years, but Trump’s statement about lowering meat prices negatively affected his business.
In October, Trump said meat prices were too high and urged them to be lowered. He also increased imports from Argentina, lifted tariffs from Brazil, and ordered checks on meat producers. These actions lowered cattle prices, but consumer prices remain high.
Farmers are unhappy. Cattle farmers in Iowa and Florida suffered losses due to falling prices. For example, Vetter bought 450 cattle at $2,500 each in late October, and by late November the price dropped $300.
Experts say lower prices will not reach consumers quickly. At the same time, U.S. meat production lost its lead to Brazil. Farmers are waiting for stability in the cattle market.
