Russia sharply increases gas exports to Central Asia

According to the results of January–November 2025, Russia’s supplies of liquefied petroleum gas—propane and butane—to Central Asian countries and Afghanistan rose sharply. Exports nearly doubled, exceeding 1 million tons. Reuters reported this citing sources.

According to the agency, after Brussels imposed sanctions on LPG, Moscow redirected volumes previously intended for the European market to new routes—mainly Central Asia and neighboring regions. This fuel is often used for heating and is also widely used in the petrochemical industry.

As a result, gas shipments to Afghanistan and other countries in the region accounted for 36% of Russia’s total LPG exports. For comparison, last year this figure was only 19%.

Afghanistan remains the largest buyer, retaining its leading position. The increase in imports from Russia coincided with a decline in Iranian exports. Iran is known to be under U.S. sanctions, which has limited its opportunities in the regional market.

It is noted that by early December this year, Afghanistan had imported $1.8 billion worth of crude oil and petroleum products and $1.4 billion worth of natural gas. These figures once again show how important energy cooperation with Russia is for the country.
