Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced that the country might be compelled to relocate its capital from Tehran. This was reported by the Middle East Eye.
According to the president, the excessive population, drought, and a shortage of water resources make further development in Tehran unfeasible. Pezeshkian pointed out that the government has proposed considering the southeastern Makran region as the potential new capital.
He added that the project has been under discussion for many years but was not implemented due to a lack of financial resources. In the president's view, the current circumstances make relocating the capital inevitable.
Tehran, with an estimated population of 10 million people, is struggling to cope with overcrowding and water shortages. Concerns about water scarcity are growing among city residents, and there is even talk of a partial evacuation.
Environmentalists remind that the issue is not only about drought but also about mismanagement of water resources. They are urging the implementation of modern water-saving methods and a reevaluation of urban planning approaches.
The Makran region is located on the shores of the Gulf of Oman and holds strategic importance for maritime trade. This area is part of the Sistan and Baluchestan province.
