Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan have reached new agreements on cooperation in the water and energy sectors. The meeting, held on November 22 in Almaty, was chaired by Kazakhstan's Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenjenov.
Due to the critical situation at the Toktogul Reservoir, the parties agreed to support each other during the winter season. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan confirmed they would supply electricity to Kyrgyzstan during the winter months.
This will help Kyrgyzstan reduce water consumption for electricity generation and preserve water levels in the Toktogul Reservoir. The water stored during the spring and summer seasons will be directed to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, ensuring stable irrigation of agricultural fields during the vegetation period.
Furthermore, the states agreed to collaborate on energy conservation and reducing excessive consumption. Representatives emphasized that such cooperation would strengthen the energy security of the entire region.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties signed a document approving the volume of electricity to be supplied during the winter period and the water resource plan for 2026. Earlier, Kursiv reported that Uzbekistan had joined the Protocol on Water and Health to combat the consequences of climate-induced droughts.
