The U.S. House of Representatives has approved the defense budget for 2026. The new budget amounts to $901 billion, making it a record high compared to previous figures.
This document was approved by 312 members of Congress, with 112 voting against it. The bill is currently under review in the Senate and is expected to be ratified next week.
The new budget exceeds the amount requested by U.S. President Donald Trump by $8 billion. This version represents a compromise between proposals previously introduced by the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Leaders from both parties, despite disagreements on some provisions, have called for support of the document. The budget includes $400 million in annual military aid to Ukraine and measures to strengthen European security.
Additionally, the budget plans to increase the salaries of U.S. military personnel by 4 percent and improve living conditions at military bases. However, provisions for insurance to cover infertility treatments were not included, as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson opposed their inclusion.
Some programs criticized by Trump, such as diversity and inclusion training, have been reduced. This budget sets guidelines for Pentagon programs but does not allocate funds directly.
To implement the budget, Congress must pass separate legislation by September 2026.
