The second round of Chile's presidential elections has marked the beginning of a new phase in the country’s political landscape. José Antonio Kast, the representative of the Republican Party and known for his conservative stance, achieved a convincing victory. According to Deutsche Welle, Kast secured 58.61% of the vote.
The 59-year-old politician's main opponent was Janett Jara, a member of the Communist Party and the candidate of the center-left alliance. She came in second place with 41.39% of the vote. This result reflects the clear political divide within Chilean society.
José Antonio Kast is well-known to the public as a far-right politician. During his campaign, he prioritized a firm stance against crime, strengthening security measures, and combating illegal immigration. These issues resonated strongly with voters concerned about national security.
Some of Kast's remarks during televised debates sparked significant controversy. Notably, he gained attention for his partial endorsement of certain aspects of the era under dictator Augusto Pinochet, who ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990. While his supporters viewed this as a symbol of determination, critics strongly opposed his position.
For context, José Antonio Kast is a lawyer and experienced politician. In 2019, he founded the Republican Party and the think tank “Ideas Republicanas” (Republican Ideas). From 2002 to 2018, he served as a member of parliament, contributing to the legislative process in the country.
The politician’s family background has also drawn public interest. His father, Michael Kast, lived from 1924 to 2014, served as a lieutenant in the German army, and was a member of the Nazi Party. After the denazification processes, he emigrated to Chile in December 1950 and settled in the Santiago region.
The election results demonstrate an increasing demand for conservative policies in Chile. The public now awaits Kast and his team to fulfill the promises made during the campaign. This period is expected to be a decisive moment for Chile’s political, social, and security sectors.
