Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that if the United States tries to take control of Greenland, it could cause major turmoil within NATO and even cast doubt on the alliance’s very existence. She stressed this is not something to joke about — signals like “we need Greenland” must be taken seriously.
Frederiksen made the remarks amid statements by US President Donald Trump suggesting that the strategically important, resource-rich Arctic island should be brought under Washington’s control. Reports say these comments have heightened concerns in Denmark and Greenland.
The toughest point in the prime minister’s stance is security. In comments to Denmark’s TV2, she warned that if the US were to take a military approach toward another NATO member, “then everything stops.” That would, of course, be a direct blow to NATO itself and to the collective security system built since the end of World War II.
The picture has grown even sharper with notes that after the latest military operation in Venezuela, anxiety in Denmark and Greenland has increased along the lines of “who’s next tomorrow?”. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and also falls under NATO’s area of responsibility. For that reason, any drastic move could shake the entire alliance from within.
Trump, for his part, has described Greenland as “highly necessary” from a national security standpoint and spoke about growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. According to media reports, he also sparked debate by allegedly mocking Denmark’s security measures in Greenland with a quip like “another dog sled.”
The conclusion is this: talk around Greenland is not just ordinary political hype — it is pushing the future of NATO, European security, and sovereignty back to the forefront. Now the key question: will the sides “cool down” the issue through talks and cooperation, or will the geopolitical temperature rise again?
