Björk backed Greenland and accused Denmark of colonialism

Icelandic singer Björk said in a Facebook post that she supports Greenland’s desire to become independent from Denmark. She wished Greenlanders luck in their struggle for independence and noted that Iceland remembers with relief how it left Danish rule in 1944. Björk wrote that Iceland preserved its language back then—otherwise her children might be speaking Danish today. This was reported by kursiv.uz. reports .
The singer said that Indigenous people in Greenland still face discrimination, while the Danish government’s stance remains unjust. Citing The Guardian, she recalled that in the 1960s–1970s some Greenlandic girls—some as young as 12—were fitted with IUDs without their knowledge. Björk also noted that even today, children of Indigenous families continue to be taken from their homes by state authorities.
Björk said the topic of colonialism triggers strong fear and hatred in her, adding that the very idea of Greenlanders moving “from one tyrannical colonizer to another” is terrifying.
The statement came as debates over Greenland’s future have intensified, driven in part by U.S. attempts to assert control over the island.
