The possibility of the United States purchasing Greenland from Denmark is being discussed. According to The Wall Street Journal sources, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed members of Congress on the plans during a closed-door session. This was reported by kursiv.uz. reports .
The news comes as Donald Trump’s statements about bringing Greenland into the United States have resurfaced. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president and his team are considering various ways to achieve this “important foreign policy objective,” and, if necessary, the option of using the US armed forces is not being ruled out.
Trump had mentioned the idea of buying Greenland during his first presidency. Now he is insisting more firmly that the territory should become part of the United States. Senator Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, said the administration’s actions on Greenland would largely come down to negotiations.
At the same time, polls show that most Greenland residents oppose the idea of joining the United States. Some NATO countries are warning that if the US tries to use force on this issue, it could deal a serious blow to the decades-long alliance between Europe and America.
Historically, the United States has purchased various territories in North America and the Caribbean from France, Russia, and Denmark. In particular, Copenhagen sold the Virgin Islands to Washington for $25 million in 1917.
